About DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation)

Implanted brain stimulation that reduces tremor, stiffness and abnormal movements in selected patients with movement disorders.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a well-established treatment for movement disorders that no longer respond well to medicines. Thin electrodes are placed in precise target areas deep in the brain and connected to a small pacemaker-like device under the skin of the chest, which delivers gentle electrical pulses.

Patients are selected carefully by our neurologists and neurosurgeons after detailed assessment. The stimulation is adjusted over follow-up visits to give the best control of symptoms, and many patients are able to reduce their medicines.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. DBS controls symptoms such as tremor, stiffness and slowness, and can reduce medicine needs, but it does not stop the underlying disease.
